Wildebeest Migrating Across The Mara River

We timed our safari in the hope that we would be able to observe part of the incredible 1.3 million strong wildebeest herd of Tanzania and Kenya as they trace a clockwise circuit of East Africa’s great grassland plains, following the rain and the ripening grasses.

The crossing is a terrifying experience as huge crocodiles are lurking.  But, its a question of survival.  The food is in the south.

Here we see part of an hour-long crossing of the Mara river as perhaps 20,000 animals mass on the north bank and then leap into the water at the rate of about 6 ever second.
