With the coming of the November full moon, high above Taunggyi in the north western state of Shan in Burma (Myanmar), the hot air balloon competition is nothing like you could possibly imagine. Hundreds of thousands of people converge here for 5 days and nights of celebration with food, music, games, fireworks. Its a crazy scene of wild joy.

A series of environmental portraits, dedicated to the warm, gentle and brave people & communities of Burma. While they may be content and even joyful and, of course, ever present in their Buddhist faith, they still live in hope that the day will come when they truly are free.

Imagine the scene at the Shwe Dagon Pagoda in Yangon, Burma.  As I circumnavigate the gigantic gold-leaf covered central stupa, we are surrounded by Buddha statues, shrines and other stupas. People come here to earn merit for their next incarnation. Some bring offerings of flowers, others wash the Buddhas. Some pray, many are meditating. I join a group and meditate for awhile. A bell begins to toll in one of the shrines; I hear monks chanting. There is a strong aroma of incense. More people arrive. As the sun goes down and the lights go on, the stupas shine gloriously. Time slows and seems to stop. This is pure magic. Perhaps for a few moments I get a sense of Nirvana. Music- A Tale of Two Cities by Mark Isham
